Dive the Line: The Ultimate Guide to Scuba Diving the Flora Bama Coast

Diving the Flora Bama Coast
Diving the Flora Bama Gulf Coast

When most people think of the Flora-Bama coast—where Perdido Key, Florida meets Orange Beach, Alabama—they picture sugar-white sand, the legendary Flora-Bama Lounge, and the Blue Angels roaring overhead. But just beneath the emerald surface of the Gulf of Mexico lies an entirely different world.
Thanks to the largest artificial reef program in the United States and the famous Florida Panhandle Shipwreck Trail , the waters off Perdido Key and Orange Beach offer some of the most diverse and exciting scuba diving in the country. Whether you're a newly certified open water diver looking for a shallow shore dive or an advanced technical diver ready to explore a sunken aircraft carrier, the Flora-Bama coast has a dive site with your name on it.
Here is your complete guide to diving the Flora-Bama coast.

The Crown Jewel: The USS Oriskany

You can't talk about diving in this area without mentioning the "Mighty O." The USS Oriskany is a decommissioned Essex-class aircraft carrier that was intentionally sunk in 2006 to create the largest artificial reef in the world .
Sitting upright in 220 feet of water about 22 miles south of Pensacola Pass, the Oriskany is a bucket-list dive for advanced and technical divers . The sheer scale of the ship is staggering. The top of the smokestack sits at 84 feet, making the upper island accessible to advanced recreational divers. However, the flight deck rests at 145 feet, and the hangar bay is at 175 feet, requiring technical training and mixed gases to explore safely .
"The island itself is larger than most wrecks, and divers can easily spend several dives exploring the upper structure." — MBT Divers

The Florida Panhandle Shipwreck Trail

The Oriskany is just one stop on the Florida Panhandle Shipwreck Trail, a collection of 20 spectacular shipwrecks scattered across the Gulf . Several of these wrecks are easily accessible from Perdido Key and Orange Beach charters.

Alabama's Artificial Reef Program

Just across the state line, Alabama boasts the most diverse artificial reef program in the United States . What started in 1953 with the sinking of 250 car bodies has grown into a massive underwater ecosystem spanning nearly 800 square miles .
One of the most famous sites off Orange Beach is The LuLu, a 271-foot retired coastal freighter sunk in 2013 by the Alabama Gulf Coast Reef & Restoration Foundation . Sitting in 115 feet of water about 17 nautical miles south of Perdido Pass, The LuLu was Alabama's first whole-ship diving reef and remains a favorite for local charters .
For a shallower, more whimsical dive, check out Poseidon's Playground, located just 3 miles offshore. With a maximum depth of 40 feet, this site features statues and concrete structures specifically placed for divers to explore .

Shore Diving and Snorkeling

You don't always need a boat to find great diving here. The Perdido Key Reef is a fantastic shore dive located just off Public Beach Access #1 on Sandy Key Drive . Built in 2014, the reef consists of 24 modules sitting in 12 to 15 feet of water . It's a haven for tropical fish, and sea turtles are frequently spotted resting in the sand nearby .
To find it, simply line up the yellow triangle and blue square range markers on the beach walkway and swim out about 300 feet . Remember to bring a dive flag, as required by Florida law, and only attempt the swim on "Green Flag" days when the surf is calm .
Over in Orange Beach, the Perdido Pass Jetties (Alabama Point) offer excellent shore diving and snorkeling . The seawall and jetty on the west side of the pass attract a wide variety of marine life. For the best visibility and calmest conditions, plan your dive for an incoming tide, about an hour before the peak .
